Mini Apps 2.0: Full-Screen Mode, Home Screen Icons, Geolocation and 10 more features

Mini Apps 2.0: Full-Screen Mode, Home Screen Icons, Geolocation and 10 more features

Mini Apps 2.0: Full-Screen Mode, Home Screen Icons, Geolocation and 7 more features

Today we launch the largest update in the history of mini apps. They get a full-screen mode, subscription plans, home screen shortcuts, sending gifts, sharing media, creating documents, access to geolocation, motion tracker, setting emoji statuses — and more.

Full-Screen Mode

Mini apps are now able to use the entire screen in portrait or landscape orientation — allowing apps to host more game genres with expanded gestures and interfaces.

Device Motion Tracking

Mini apps are able to receive information about the motion of your device to add unique controls to games or build immersive VR experiences.

Developers can lock the screen orientation to ensure there is no unnecessary rotation if their app uses device motion for controls.

Home Screen Shortcuts

You can now place direct shortcuts to specific mini apps on the home screen of your device — accessing your favorite games and services in one tap.

Geolocation Access

You can now share your location with mini apps — which gives developers the ability to make location-based games with points of interest or interactive maps for events.

Access to location data is disabled by default — you must specifically give location permissions to each individual mini app with which you'd like to share this data.

Gifts from Apps

Apps can now use their stars to send you gifts as rewards to celebrate achievements.

We've also added a new privacy setting that lets you control who can send you gifts that will appear on your profile.

Emoji Statuses from Apps

With this update, Telegram Premium users can set emoji statuses from inside mini apps, showing others that they're in a game 🎮 or a taxi 🚕.

Mini apps can integrate APIs from other services — instantly updating a user's emoji status when they start playing music 🎶, open a book 📚 or turn on a movie 🍿.

Apps with location permissions could also be used to update your status when you're at work 💼 or out of the office 🏖.

Developers can also create their own custom emoji packs to offer as status options, adding to the viral potential of mini apps.

Media Sharing

You can now share media directly from mini apps — sending referral codes, custom memes and more to any chat.

Mini apps can also create media for you to post to your stories.

Creating Documents

Mini apps can also generate documents and files which you can download — such as AI-generated profile pictures or audio files.

Subscription Plans

Developers are able to offer subscriptions to their mini app using Telegram Stars — monetizing their efforts with multiple tiers of content and features.

Telegram Stars earned from digital products and subscriptions can be used to increase message limits for the app or claim rewards.

Developers are also eligible to earn rewards from Telegram Ads in bots and mini apps.

Loading Screen Customization

Developers can further customize the loading screen of their mini app in @BotFather — adding their own icon and specific colors that will be displayed before the app starts loading.

Device Hardware Info

To better optimize graphics and increase performance, mini apps can access basic hardware info about your device, such as its processing power and memory capacity — then automatically adjust settings to provide the smoothest experience.

And More

Developers can now know when their mini app is minimized and restored from the app bar and make sure they handle transitions correctly.

If you are a developer, see this page for detailed documentation and the full list of changes, including an easier way for mini apps to access profile pictures and support for third-party validation of mini app data.

Everyone can already try out early implementations of some of the new features in apps like @playdeckbot and @major (the Major Maze game on the Games tab).

That's all for today's update. We're already working on the next big thing for mini apps and beyond.

Improved Videos and Much More

Improved Videos and Much More

TITLE

Today's update adds faster loading, better quality and new speed controls to videos, last edit timestamps, attaching media to sent messages, increased limits for mini apps, new monetization options for developers – and much more.

Faster Video Loading, Better Quality

For videos newly uploaded to large channels, the video player now automatically selects a quality level based on your connection to save your data and load videos faster. Users can also manually select their preferred quality level – High, Medium or Low.

On iOS, we've also made it easier to switch to Picture-in-Picture Mode – simply swipe up to continue watching as you browse your chats. Swiping down still closes the video.

To adjust video quality, tap the ⚙️ gear icon in the video player.

Since users no longer have to watch videos in the resolution in which they were uploaded, large channel owners can afford to post better-quality videos. They will no longer need to pre-process their videos for the best viewing experience — Telegram will now optimize each uploaded video for them and compress it in several qualities.

Users on weaker connections will automatically get more compressed videos, while those with high-speed internet can enjoy the full resolution.

These new video quality features are currently available for channels with thousands of subscribers.

Adjusting Playback Speed

For years, videos on Telegram have supported multiple speed settings – and now users can seamlessly speed up videos with new gestures without tapping through settings.

Just hold down on the right side of a video to activate 1.5x speed – and slide right gradually to increase the speed to up to 2.5x. Release your finger to return to normal speed.

On Android, you can double-tap on the left or right side of the video to skip 10 seconds in either direction.

Add Media to Sent Messages

If you forget to attach your photo, video or file before sending, you can quickly edit the message to add media in just two taps – rather than deleting it and starting over.

You can also edit sent media to re-edit photos or replace media in a message.

Last Edit Timestamps

Edited messages now show a timestamp, displaying when the message was last edited. If a message has been edited more than once, it will show the time of the most recent edit.

Your messages in small groups and private chats also have detailed read receipts – showing the time when your message was opened by each member.

Chat-Specific Hashtags

Group and channel owners can use the new format #hashtag@username for hashtags that only show posts and stories from the same chat when tapped.

For example, a user tapping #travel would see search results from all of Telegram – while #travel@durov would immediately open results only from the @durov channel.

Typing a hashtag in the message bar of public chats shows a special menu – allowing you to add the chat's username to the hashtag in just one tap.

Only public posts and public stories appear in global hashtag searches.

Telegram Ads in Bots

Bots and mini apps are now able to participate in revenue sharing from Telegram Ads – giving services another way to help support their development.

Telegram Ads are unobtrusive and privacy-conscious – supporting Telegram's sustainable monetization strategy, while sharing 50% of ad revenue with content creators and bot developers.

Increased Message Limits for Bots

All Telegram bots can send up to 30 messages per second to their users – completely free of charge. To better accommodate large-scale services, bots are now able to enable increased message limits and send up to 1000 messages per second.

Sending messages with increased limits costs just 0.1 Star per message, paid with Telegram Stars from the bot's balance. Developers can receive Stars from paid content and digital products in their bot.

Exact Reaction Counters

In case you want to know the exact number of heart (or star, or pumpkin) reactions your posts receive, press and hold the counters for more details.

That's it for today. Enjoy the new videos while we work on more stuff to put into demo videos for the next update!

P.S. Happy Halloween! We've added some new limited gifts for those celebrating.

Gifts, Verification Platform and More

Gifts, Verification Platform and More

Introducing Gifts, Verification Platform and More

Users can now send Gifts to their friends. The recipients of gifts can display them on their profile pages or turn them into Stars. Telegram Stars can be used for many things, including supporting creators and buying services in mini apps.

Additionally, Telegram launched a platform for businesses to verify customer phone numbers: this new verification platform lets users easily confirm their phone numbers by receiving a code via Telegram and will cost businesses just $0.01 per user. We've also improved video chats, added new ways to report content on Telegram — and more.

Gifts

Telegram users can now send each other gifts for Telegram Stars — celebrating holidays and congratulating contacts with animated artwork and custom messages.

Just in case you need to give a unicorn instead of a star. 😌

When you receive a gift, you can display it on the new 'Gifts' tab of your profile — or discard the gift and get some of its Stars to spend elsewhere, including on more gifts.

To send a gift, open the user's profile and tap ⋮ / ⋯ > Send a Gift. You can add any message or emoji.

Sending a gift

Just in case the unicorn needs explaining. 😌

When sending a gift, you can choose to hide your name. The recipient will still know who sent it, but nobody else will see your name if the gift is displayed on their profile.

Verification Platform

We know from our own experience how expensive it can be for businesses to verify phone numbers of their customers. Starting today, any business, app or website can send verification codes via Telegram and pay for them on Fragment. Telegram codes are faster, cheaper, more secure and convenient than SMS or other alternatives.

Just in case you don't want to spend half your company's budget on codes. 😌

Users will instantly receive messages with codes in a special chat inside Telegram.

Telegram's Gateway API is completely free to test. Interested developers can learn more in our detailed guide.

Improved Reporting Interface

Each day, Telegram moderators remove millions of pieces of content that violates our Terms of Service. Since 2015, all Telegram apps allow users to report messages to moderators.

To further improve moderators' ability to process reports at scale and our AI capabilities, the reporting menu has been expanded with even more detailed options for each category. The list of reporting reasons is now dynamically updated from the server, allowing us to suggest the most relevant reporting reasons in real-time, adapting to unfolding events and trends.

Just in case you need to report precisely that. 😌

To report a message, tap on Android, hold on iOS or right-click on Desktop or Web and select 'Report'.

Redesigned Video Chats on iOS

Video chats on iOS have been rebuilt from scratch to increase performance and improve battery life.

This also means that devices now stay dramatically cooler on long calls — even with multiple video feeds from dozens of participants.

Redesigned Video Chats on iOS

Just in case you already have warm gloves. 😌

Video chats on Telegram let you show your camera and share your screen at the same time.

RTMP Streams on Android

Telegram for Android now has support for livestreaming with RTMP — allowing you to generate a stream key and connect your video feed to popular apps like OBS Studio and XSplit Broadcaster.

Just in case androids dream of RTMP streams. 😌

RTMP streams are available on all Telegram apps — they were first introduced on iOS and Desktop in 2022.

That's all for today, we'll be working on new features while you're busy unpacking gifts.

Star Giveaways and More

Star Giveaways and More

Star Giveaways and More

With today's update, groups and channels can use Telegram Stars as prizes in Giveaways. Also, any article you open in the Telegram Browser can now be converted to Instant View, making it easy to read.

Star Giveaways

Channel and group owners can host giveaways to promote their communities and reward random members with prizes — in exchange, they earn boosts which unlock posting channel stories and other perks.

In addition to Telegram Premium subscriptions and real-world prizes, you can now give away Telegram Stars as well. Winners can spend their Stars on paid media and exclusive subscriptions in channels — or in games and mini apps on the Telegram platform.

Just in case you want a meteor shower in your channel. 😌

Giveaways are prepaid and completely transparent — with customizable settings for organizers.

Channel owners can start a giveaway via Channel Settings > Statistics > Boosts. For groups, go to Group Info > Statistics > Boosts.

The App Store and Google Play limit the size of transactions — but with @PremiumBot you can create larger giveaways at a lower cost.

Instant View for Telegram Browser

In 2016, Telegram launched the Instant View standard — which automatically optimizes articles into perfectly formatted pages for your device with zero load times. This feature works for thousands of the most popular sites.

Telegram's in-app browser can now convert any article you are viewing into a more readable, lightweight layout.

Just in case you like to choose your own distractions. 😌

To change a page to Instant View format, open the browser menu and select Show Instant View.

This new functionality was made possible thanks to Mozilla’s open source library.

Fewer Bugs and More Optimization

Our team also set aside some special time last month to fix bugs and increase performance across Telegram's mobile and desktop apps. Thank you for all the user reports on our dedicated Bug Platform!

You can also leave your feature requests on our Suggestions Platform.

Mini App Improvements

Several bug fixes were implemented for mini apps – making them even smoother and more responsive, along with new button options for developers.

Instead of just one button, mini apps can now display two buttons at a time in a side-by-side or stacked orientation. We also implemented a new shimmer effect for buttons that can be used to attract attention and guide users.

Just in case you need a button with your button. 😌

Developers can see the full details in our latest Bot API update.

10 Million Premium Subscribers

This month, Telegram surpassed 10 million Premium subscribers — a 2x increase in less than 8 months. This growth helps support our goal of sustainable monetization that prioritizes users and their privacy.

We thank all of our Premium subscribers for their continued support — which allows Telegram to continue creating powerful features that change how nearly one billion people communicate.

That's all for today's update, we'll be back to give away more features very soon.

Super Channels, Star Reactions and Subscriptions

Super Channels, Star Reactions and Subscriptions

Introducing Super Channels, Star Reactions and Subscriptions

Today is Telegram's 11th anniversary. Since August 2013, we've pioneered hundreds of features and grown to nearly one billion users with zero marketing budget — all thanks to the support we got from you, our dear users and content creators.

With today's update, we continue the tradition of giving back to our community. Meet Star Reactions and Star Subscriptions that let users support content creators, paid media for bots and Business accounts, and a new mode for Telegram Channels that lets admins post as their other channels or personal profiles.

Star Reactions

Users can now directly support their favorite channels and content creators by sending them Telegram Stars using a new Star reaction.

Channel owners receive 100% of the stars — and can convert them into Toncoin cryptocurrency rewards or subsidized ads.

Just in case tapping is your game. 😌

Each post with star reactions shows a leaderboard with the top senders, but users can opt out of appearing there if they prefer more privacy.

Reaction Leaderboards

Just in case you want to stand out — and in case you don't. 🥸

To turn on Star Reactions on your posts, go to Channel Settings > Reactions > Enable Paid Reactions.

Star Subscriptions

Content creators can now make special invite links that allow joining a channel in exchange for a monthly payment in Telegram Stars.

Just in case you're something of a star yourself. 😌

It takes just a few taps to create an exclusive channel for extra content, early access media, or VIP livestreams.

To create a paid link, go to Channel Settings > Channel Type > Manage Invite Links > Create a New Link and enable Require Monthly Fee.

Paid Media for Bots

Channel owners can monetize their efforts by posting paid photos and videos in their channels.

This update makes paid posts available to bots — including bot admins in channels and bots powering Telegram Business accounts.

Just in case your content wants to buy a bot. 🧐

This opens new ways to automate channels and businesses — or build sustainable services like image generation, video upscaling, and more.

Developers can find out more about implementing this feature here.

Power to the Content Creators

Telegram charges next to zero commission when developers or channel owners use their stars to receive rewards in Toncoin.

If content creators decide to reinvest stars into promoting their channel with Telegram ads, we will subsidize such ads with a further 30% discount.

Super Channels

When you post in a Telegram channel, subscribers will normally see the name and picture of the channel instead of your own.

Starting today, you can make your channel look more like a group where admins may post as their own profiles — or even as their other channels.

Just in case you want to put a channel in your channel. 🐶

Channel admins can change who they post as at any time by tapping the profile picture in the message bar. Admins are never visible unless they explicitly choose to post in the channel with their own profile.

To turn your channel into a Super Channel, go to Channel Settings > Administrators and turn on Sign Messages and Show Authors' Profiles.

Document Viewer on iOS

On iOS, documents like .pdf, .xls, or .docx are now opened in separate tabs of the Telegram browser to help you easily switch between files and messages in chats.

Just in case you've had enough paper. 📎

Since its previous birthday, Telegram has had 17 major updates introducing Stories, Stars, Quotes, Profiles, Recommendations, Telegram Business, Sticker Maker, Giveaway Platform, Bookmarks, Creator Rewards, and so much more.

And we're already working on the next year of Telegram History.

Telegram Browser, Mini App Store, Gifting Stars and More

2024-08-01 00:18:25

Telegram Browser, Mini App Store, Gifting Stars and More

Telegram Browser, Mini App Store, Gifting Stars and More

Today's update brings a new in-app browser that supports multiple tabs and makes Web3 available to almost a billion users, a Mini App Store, a new kind of mini apps, the ability to gift Stars to friends — and much more.

Telegram Browser

Pages you open with the in-app browser can now be collapsed and reopened from the bottom bar, allowing you to freely move between your messages and websites, instant view articles, and mini apps.

Telegram's browser supports decentralized websites hosted on TON — in all mobile and native desktop apps. This makes Web3 immediately available to our almost one billion monthly users.

Just in case you wanted to introduce crypto to the world. 😌

Now, when you receive a notification while reading an article, viewing a web page, or playing a game, you can check your messages — and go back without losing your progress. You can also add bookmarks to return to a page later.

Developers can learn more about decentralized TON Sites by visiting ton.org — or opening getting-started.ton in the latest version of Telegram.

Mini App Store

More than 500 million out of Telegram's 950 million users interact with mini apps every month.

We've added a new 'Apps' tab in Search which shows a list of apps you use and a list of popular mini apps. Now you can quickly access all your games and services — or find something new.

Just in case your world is bigger than cats and hamsters. 😌

Developers can now upload video demos and screenshots for their mini app previews to let users know what to expect.

Just in case you want to let the cat out of the bag. 😌

Mini apps that utilize Telegram Stars now have a chance to be shown in the 'Popular Apps' section. Developers can learn more about mini apps on this page.

Sharing from Mini Apps to Stories

Mini apps can now generate custom story content — like AI-generated videos, achievements, or snapshots of leaderboards — for users to share as a Telegram Story right from the mini app. This enables new kinds of apps — and helps existing ones spread among their users' contacts.

Just in case your cats have a story to share. 😌

Developers can go here for more details about adding this feature to their mini apps.

Gifting Stars to Friends

Telegram Stars let you buy digital goods in mini apps or access paid content in channels. With this update, you can buy stars as a gift for your contacts.

Just in case your friends already have Premium. 😌

To gift stars, go to Settings > My Stars (on iOS, you will currently see this menu only if you have previously purchased stars for yourself).

Users celebrating their birthday will appear at the top of the list in a special section. Gifted stars will show up in the chat as a beautiful animated gift box.

Flash when Recording Video Messages

Video messages now let you use the front flash to brighten your screen with extra light when recording in the dark.

Tap the microphone icon in the message bar to switch to video recording. Then press and hold the camera icon to record your video message. Swipe up to keep recording and tap the flash icon in the bottom left corner.

Weather Widget in Stories

Users can now share the weather in their stories by adding an animated widget to everything from sunny selfies to ski slopes.

Just in case you need to drop it like it's hot. 😌

The widget automatically switches between Celsius or Fahrenheit depending on the settings on the viewer’s device, so you won’t ever have to bother with choosing between C and F. On cloudless nights, the widget will show the moon phase.

You can also add music, links or a location to your story from the 'Stickers' section.

Story Covers

When posting a video story to your profile, you can choose which frame will be used as the cover photo.

Just in case you judge stories by their covers. 😌

Browser and Mini App Tabs on MacOS

Before you go, check out how gorgeous the new browser on Telegram for macOS is. Its new tabs support everything: games, mini apps, instant view pages and even Web3 ton-sites.

Just in case you're into juggling at your desk. 😌

That's it for July. We'll be looking for the upcoming August update among our open tabs.

Mini App Bar, Paid Media, Story Search & More

Mini App Bar, Paid Media, Story Search & More

Introducing Mini App Bar, Paid Media, Story Search & More

Our June update adds a way to minimize mini apps into a compact bar, helps content creators monetize their channels with paid photos and videos, and improves Stories by introducing search by hashtag or location and a new link widget.

Starting today, mini app developers and content creators can use the Stars they've earned to receive rewards in Toncoin – or buy Telegram Ads at special discounted rates.

Mini App Bar

More than 500 million Telegram users now interact with mini apps monthly to purchase products, access services, and play games.

Starting today, you can collapse mini apps into a bar at the bottom of your screen. This lets you respond to messages or open other mini apps – and then return to a mini app without waiting for it to load again.

Just in case you need to keep an eye on some hamster. 😌

To minimize an app, simply swipe down on its header. To reopen, tap the app bar at the bottom of your screen and select one of your active apps.

If you are a developer, check out this page for details.

Pay for Content with Telegram Stars

Last month we launched Telegram Stars for purchasing digital products in mini apps.

Now, content creators can accept Stars by publishing paid photos or videos on their channels. Subscribers will be allowed to view such posts only after paying the author to unlock them.

Just in case you want to charge people for watching your starfish. 😌

Creators can use Stars to get cryptocurrency rewards in Toncoin, or use them to advertise their channel and get even more subscribers – all of this with next to 0 commission from Telegram.

Search Stories by Hashtag

Tapping a #hashtag in any chat lets you see search results for that tag from your chats and from public channels. With this update, tapping hashtags in story captions lets you browse public stories with matching tags.

Just in case you want #more. 😌

If you're a content creator or business, you can use hashtags to help grow your audience – giving Telegram users a way organically discover your profile or channel.

Telegram Business offers powerful features for creators and companies and is included for free with Telegram Premium.

Search Stories by Location

Users on vacation, at an event, or simply out to eat can add a location tag to their story to show others where to find beautiful views and tasty treats.

Like hashtags, tapping a location tag lets you browse public stories from the same place – so you can relive last night's concert or preview your next travel destination.

Just in case we are not alone in the Universe. 😌

Only stories that you are allowed to view appear in hashtag or location searches. Private stories never appear in search results.

Premium: Link Widget in Stories

Premium users can make a link stand out by adding a link widget to their stories. This creates a stylish link preview on your photo or video, which supports both light and dark backgrounds to match your media.

Just in case a huge link is better than a 1000 pictures. 😌

The link widget lets you add a custom link name – which replaces the URL text at the top of the preview.

Rewards for Content Creators and Developers

Bot developers offering digital goods and services and creators monetizing their channels with paid posts are now able to use the Telegram Stars they earn to receive rewards in Toncoin or buy Telegram Ads.

Telegram takes practically no commission from transactions in Stars, so only taxes and payment system fees will apply. When you transfer Stars into your Telegram Ad account, Telegram even adds a 30% discount to cover all third-party payment system fees.

Toncoin Rewards

If your channel or bot has Stars in its balance, you can withdraw them as a Toncoin reward via Fragment. Toncoins are the main currency on The Open Network – the world's fastest blockchain. You can easily exchange them for any other cryptocurrency.

Just in case collecting Stars wasn't your end goal. 😌

To view the Star balance of your bot, open its Profile > tap 'Edit' > Balance. For channels, go to Profile > Statistics > Monetization.

Subsidized Ads for Creators and Developers

Anyone can place privacy-conscious ads in public Telegram channels to promote their bot, channel or group.

Bot developers and content creators can also use Stars to promote their bot or channel at a special rate with a 30% discount – creating a cost-effective way of reaching new users.

Subsidized Ads for Creators and Developers

Just in case you've beaten the marshmallow test. 😌

To use Stars for ads, go to your bot's or channels' Balance or Monetization section and tap 'Buy Ads'. Stars can only be used to advertise the same bot or channel that earned them.

For more details on managing your Stars, receiving rewards, and placing ads, check out the Terms of Service for Bot Developers and Content Creators.

That's all for today – we'll be busy browsing stories and playing games instead of working on the next update.

Telegram Stars: Pay for Digital Goods and More

2024-06-06 23:44:26

Telegram Stars: Pay for Digital Goods and More

Telegram Stars: Pay for Digital Goods and More

Over 400 million users interact with bots and mini apps on Telegram every month – to buy products, access services, play games, and much more. With today's update, bots and mini apps can sell digital goods and services.

Digital Goods and Services

For years, businesses have been able to sell physical products on Telegram via bots and mini apps and accept payments from around the world. This month, we updated the Bot Platform to seamlessly support payments for digital products as well.

Telegram Stars

To enable payments for digital goods and services across the Telegram ecosystem, we're launching Telegram Stars. Stars can be acquired through in-app purchases via Apple and Google or PremiumBot, then spent on digital products offered by bots – from e-books and online courses to items in Telegram games.

You can try out payments with Stars in @DurgerKingBot which offers a special cake for the occasion (and even if the cake is a lie, it will refund your stars).

Ready for App Stores

Telegram Stars are compliant with Apple and Google's latest policies on sales of digital products – and gives developers in the Telegram ecosystem and their users unprecedented access to in-app purchases on mobile app stores.

Soon, developers will be able to withdraw the stars earned by their bots in Toncoins via Fragment.

Purchases of physical products stay exactly the same – using any of Telegram's supported payment providers. Developers can read more about the changes for digital products on this page.

With fast, user-friendly payments for digital goods and services, the bot and mini app platform will allow new types of businesses to reach over 900 million potential customers inside Telegram.

More than Bots

This is just the beginning for Telegram Stars. Future updates will bring extra features and functionality to Stars – like gifts for content creators and more.

More than Bots

For more details about Stars, please check our CEO's post on his channel, updated Terms of Services for Developers and the Detailed Guide for Payments in Stars.

Message Effects, Hashtag Search, and More

2024-06-01 01:34:42

Message Effects, Hashtag Search, and More

Introducing Message Effects, Hashtag Search, and More

With this update, you can add spectacular animated effects to messages you send, move captions above media, find public posts using global hashtags, hide fragments of text with collapsible quote blocks – and more.

Message Effects

Messages in 1-on-1 chats can now be sent with animated effects that play when the recipient opens the chat. Nothing says 'I Love You' like a screen covered in kisses 💋, or flames 🔥, or something else altogether 😈.

Everyone can use 6 free effects, while Telegram Premium unlocks hundreds more – including all the effects from Premium stickers.

To add an effect, simply press and hold the Send arrow and pick the emotion that matches your message.

From the same menu, you can schedule a message or send it silently.

Captions Above Media

Captions can now be moved above media so that illustrations for your posts and meme punchlines know their place.

To do this, select media in your attachment menu, then type a caption into the input field that appears, press and hold the Send arrow, and select 'Move Caption Up' to change its position.

You can also edit media or albums to move their captions up or down – simply edit the message, press and hold the Save button and select 'Move Caption Up'.

Quick Actions for Phone Numbers

Tapping a phone number in a chat opens a redesigned menu – with options to send a message, start a call, or add the number as a contact with just one more tap.

Hashtag Search

Since 2015, you can use hashtags to easily search for #important messages (or #cats) across your chats.

With today's update, hashtags become global. Tapping a hashtag in any chat also shows search results from big public channels – letting you quickly find breaking #news from channels or scroll through #travel videos.

When browsing the 'Public Posts' tab, you can choose to view them as a scrollable feed of posts or as a compact list.

Global hashtag search only includes messages from big public channels. Messages from private chats are never shown.

Collapsible Quotes

People like to read short texts – so much that we're surprised you've read this far!

You can now make your messages more compact by hiding fragments of text inside collapsible quote blocks.

Simply add quote formatting and tap the collapse button in the input field. Your readers will be able to expand and read the quote – or scroll a lot less to skip it.

Colorful Calls on macOS

Last December, we added dynamic backgrounds and stylish animations to voice and video calls on Android and iOS. Now those same interface updates are available for users of our native macOS app – making desktop calls more beautiful while using fewer resources than before.

That's all for today, we'll be busy watching the firework 🎆 effects until the next update.

My Profile, Recommended Channels and 15 More Features

2024-04-26 00:00:33

My Profile, Recommended Channels and 15 More Features

Introducing My Profile, Recommended Channels and 15 More Features

This month we've added more than 15 new features, including recommended channels, a way to view your own profile and display your channel and birthday on your page, improved moderation tools for group admins – and much more.

Recommended Channels

The search interface has a new 'Channels' tab that shows the channels you follow. The tab also has a list of recommended channels with similar topics where you can discover new content creators.

When viewing posts from a channel, you can pull up to jump to the next unread channel in your list. After hopping through all your channels, you can keep scrolling to browse recommended channels.

Channel recommendations are based only on the general topic of channels you already subscribe to. So any predominance of particular types of vegetables or fruit is entirely on you.

My Profile

Your Settings now have a 'My Profile' section that allows you to view your profile as it appears to other users – and quickly edit or change any information.

You can now pin up to 3 stories to the top of your profile page – to showcase your achievements or make sure nobody misses that cat in a suit you met in an elevator.

We've also added little icons that show the privacy settings of your posted stories, so you can quickly see if they need adjustments.

Birthdays

Anyone can choose to add their birthday to their profile – letting all their contacts know when to bring gifts. On your birthday, anyone who visits your profile will be greeted with animated confetti and plenty of balloons.

When it's someone else's birthday, a banner appears in your chat list – so you won't forget to congratulate them. Don't worry if you forgot their gift, you can tap the banner to quickly send a subscription to Telegram Premium.

By default, your date of birth is only visible to your contacts. Like other information on your profile, birthdays have granular privacy settings which you can control via Settings > Privacy and Security > Date of Birth.

Channels on Your Profile

If you own a channel, you can now add it to your profile page. This places a detailed preview of the latest post above your bio – sending visitors to your personal project, online portfolio or company blog in one tap.

Channels on Your Profile

Collectibles on Your Profile

Owners of collectible usernames can link them to their Telegram account or channels – listing the extra names on the profile page.

Tapping a collectible username or anonymous number on someone's profile now pulls up extra info about the collectible – like when it was acquired and for how much.

Collectibles on Your Profile

Collectibles can be bought and sold on the Fragment platform, which uses the TON blockchain.

Share Location Indefinitely

When meeting up with friends or taking a trip, you can share your live location with individual users or entire group chats. This lets others follow your journey – or even set an alert for when you arrive.

Now you can add more time to an existing shared location. And if you want friends and family to keep track of your movements for extended periods, there is a new option to share your location with them indefinitely, until you turn it off.

To start sharing your location, open the attachment menu in a private chat or a group and select Location > Share My Live Location for….

Reaction Notification Settings

We've added new settings that let you control notifications for reactions to your messages.

Reaction Notification Settings

This update also introduces notifications about reactions to your stories, so you will never miss a heart again. (Or a flame. Or a thumbs up. Or a… pigeon? Whatever that means.)

The new settings are available in Settings > Notifications and Sounds > Reactions.

Profile Pictures in Forwarded Messages

Forwarded messages now show the profile picture of the user from whom they were forwarded. This makes them more recognizable in the chat – and makes it easier to read forwarded conversations with multiple authors.

Profile Pictures in Forwarded Messages

If you limit who can link back to your account when forwarding, your profile picture will not appear on messages forwarded from you.

Tip: On Telegram, you can set a separate public photo that will be displayed to users you don't know.

Premium: Animated Emoji in Polls

Premium users can now include animated and custom emoji in polls. At long last, democracy can help decide whether animated ducks are better than static cats.

Mass Moderation for Groups

Group admins can now select several messages and perform multiple moderation actions at the same time – in a new menu with individual toggles for each user and action to maximize efficiency.

The menu also has options to restrict user permissions instead of banning them from the community right away.

Admins of groups with 200+ members can also enable aggressive spam filtering to automatically detect and restrict problematic users in their chat.

Improved Recent Actions

The Recent Actions section lets group admins view notable events that took place in the chat in the past 48 hours, like deleted or edited messages and admin activity.

With this update, recent actions are now more compact, with similar actions by the same admin grouped together. Admins can also see replies and to which topics recent action messages belong.

Improved Recent Actions

We also fixed text highlighting when you search recent actions – now it works just as well as when you search in regular Telegram chats.

Reaction Management for Channels

Channel admins now have an extra way to manage reactions – selecting a maximum number of reaction types each post can have to keep things tidy.

This allows channels to frequently change their available reactions (like adding something relevant for a holiday), without a bunch of Easter bunnies popping up on past posts.

Premium: Unhide Ads

By default, subscribing to Telegram Premium hides ads in channels. If you wish to still see them – either to check your own ads or help channels earn rewards, there is a new toggle to show sponsored messages in Settings > Telegram Business.

Unhide Ads

Premium: Open Stories Anonymously

While viewing stories, Premium users can activate Stealth Mode in the story menu to hide their recent views and continue hiding views for the next 25 minutes.

Now you can also activate Stealth Mode from the chat list – simply press and hold a story in your feed and select 'View Anonymously'. This opens the story without adding you to the list of viewers even for a second, and also turns on Stealth Mode.

Open Stories Anonymously

Swipe for Next Topic

When browsing groups that have topics enabled, you can pull up at the bottom of the chat to go to the next unread topic.

Swipe for Next Topic

Instant View on Telegram Desktop

Telegram's cross-platform Desktop app now supports Instant View for websites – opening the page and all its media directly in your app with zero load times.

Instant View on Telegram Desktop

If you ever find errors on an Instant View page, scroll to the bottom and tap 'Wrong Layout?' to send us feedback.

Rewards for Creators

A new reward system has launched for channel owners – sharing 50% of the revenue from ads shown in their channels. Withdrawals on Fragment are already available for eligible channels – with no fees.

Users can promote their channel or bot by creating sponsored messages on the Telegram Ad Platform – powered by the TON blockchain.

900 Million Users

Telegram continues to be one of the most-used and most-downloaded apps in the world – and now has more than 900 million monthly active users. To read more about this major milestone and what the future holds for Telegram, see this post by our CEO and founder.

Sticker Editor — Create Your Own Stickers

2024-04-14 20:37:40

Sticker Editor — Create Your Own Stickers

Sticker Editor

Starting today, anyone can quickly create stickers and entire sticker sets using a new powerful editor — without leaving Telegram.

Make a Sticker

Just take any photo and add text, drawings — or countless animated stickers, emojis and GIFs that exist on the platform. Turning cats into visual art has never been easier in the history of humankind (and catkind).

It takes just one tap to cut out objects and remove the background. You can manually erase and restore parts of your photo – or add an outline for that classic sticker look.

Create Sticker button

To start making stickers, open the sticker panel from your input field in any chat, then tap the inviting (+) button.

Add It to a Set

When you're done, simply send the sticker – or create a sticker set so that friends can reuse your cut-out cats in their chats.

To add a sticker to a set, choose the emojis that describe its emotion. Telegram will also use AI to suggest you emoji based on your image — like a cat, dog, or car.

On Telegram, emojis act as shortcuts for stickers. When you type an emoji in a chat, Telegram automatically offers matching stickers you can send.

Expand your Set

Since 2015, millions of artists and meme-makers have been using Telegram's open platform to share their creations.

You can add any existing stickers to your custom sets. For example, to bring all your favorites together in one pack — or to create themed collections.

Share your Sets

To share your sticker sets, just send someone one of the stickers. They can tap it to add the whole set. Each set also has its unique t.me link.

With this update, we've added neat link previews for all sticker and emoji sets.

We'll also announce 16 more new features this month, but first — don't you have some stickers to make?

Introducing Telegram Business

2024-04-01 00:32:30

Introducing Telegram Business

Introducing Telegram Business

Starting today, anyone can turn their Telegram account into a business account – and get access to business features, such as opening hours, location, quick replies, automated messages, custom start page, chatbot support, and more.

Introducing Telegram Business

Telegram has long allowed developers to build powerful bots and mini-apps which were widely used by businesses.

Starting today, any user can easily use business features — without any coding skills.

Hours and Location

Businesses can display their hours of operation and show their location on a map.

Users will know where to find you and immediately see if you're open.

Start Page

Businesses can customize their start page for empty chats, choosing which text and sticker people see before they start a conversation.

This lets you showcase info about products and services or welcome customers with branded artwork.

Quick Replies

Telegram Business allows you to create quick replies. Quick replies are shortcuts for sending preset messages that may contain several messages and support text formatting, links, stickers, media, and files.

This helps you quickly send information that your customers often need – like a schedule of classes or a PDF with your menu.

Typing a / in the message bar shows a panel with all of your quick replies – that you can send or edit in one tap. This only works in private chats, not groups.

Greeting Messages

For more automation, you can set a greeting message that will be sent to users who contact you for the first time. This will ensure they get an instant reply with important info – or just a friendly hello. 👋

Your greeting may also include answers to frequent questions or more details about your business.

You can specify a period after which a new message will result in your greeting being sent again.

Away Messages

You can also set an away message to be sent when your business is closed or while you're on vacation.

This way people will always know when they can expect a response from your business.

To prevent sending business messages to friends, family, or employees, you can limit any automated messages to exclude specific chats or entire chat categories.

Tags for Chats

With Telegram Business or Premium, you can add colored labels to chats, giving them unique tags based on the chat folders they are in.

This helps you quickly differentiate between customers in your chat list based on their status, needs, or priority level.

All Telegram users can create custom chat folders to organize their chats – adding separate tabs to the chat list for Work, School, News and more.

Links to Chat

To make it even easier for customers to reach out, you can create links to chat with your business – like a button to reserve a table or track an order. When tapped, these links instantly open a chat with you and paste a suggested message for the user.

You can use these links both inside and outside of Telegram – from a link on your site to a QR code on a restaurant menu.

Each link shows how many times it was tapped so you can track its performance.

Chatbots for Business

Business users can connect Telegram bots that will process and answer messages on their behalf. This allows businesses to seamlessly integrate any existing tools and workflows, or add AI assistants that manage their chats.

When adding a chatbot, you can configure which chats the bot can access – such as excluding all chats with your contacts, or only responding to new chats.

This opens a new era for Telegram Bots – we welcome all developers to create new services that will help businesses automate and improve their communication with Telegram users. See our Bot Manuals for details.

Telegram will be introducing new features for businesses in the coming updates. For the moment, all Telegram Business features are available for free to Premium subscribers. You can find them in Settings > Telegram Business.

Sharing Revenue with Channel Owners

2024-04-01 00:30:04

Sharing Revenue with Channel Owners

Sharing Revenue with Channel Owners

Today, we're introducing one of the most generous reward systems in the history of social media. Telegram channel owners can now receive 50% of the revenue from ads displayed in their channels.

Rewards for Creators

Telegram users generate over 1 trillion views in channels every month. Starting today, owners of public channels with at least 1000 subscribers can be rewarded with 50% of the revenue from ads displayed in their channels.

Monetization stats of a channel

Channel owners can withdraw their rewards with no fees – or reinvest them into Telegram ads, collectible usernames or Premium giveaways.

Go to Channel Settings > Statistics > Monetization to see your channel's monetization stats. Withdrawals for channel owners will be via Fragment. You can find the full terms and conditions here.

TON-based Ads

To make this possible, we're introducing a new type of ads, which users can purchase with Toncoins – a cryptocurrency powered by the TON Blockchain.

We chose the TON Blockchain because it has low fees, high transaction speeds – and holds a record for the number of transactions it can process per second.

Anyone can now promote their bot or channel – with budgets as low as a handful of Toncoins. When creating a Telegram ad, you choose the exact channels where you'd like it to appear, so you have full control over their context.

Creating a TON-based ad

To get started, simply log in on the Telegram Ad Platform.

Why Telegram Ads Are Special

Telegram ads are very different from ads on other apps. They are shown only in large public channels. They never appear in your chats, chat list or other interfaces.

Telegram ads are not based on user data. They depend only on the channel in which you see them – and they directly benefit channel owners.

Telegram ad in a large channel

We understand that not everyone likes ads, even if they support content creators. Luckily, on Telegram anyone can turn off ads by subscribing to Telegram Premium – and get dozens of exclusive features, including new Telegram Business features.

Stories for Groups and 8 More Features

Stories for Groups and 8 More Features

Stories for Groups and 8 More Features

Telegram brings conversation in groups to an entire new level with 9 new features that redefine many-to-many communication. Now, groups can publish stories and save them as posts on their profile pages. Groups can set unique wallpapers and statuses, as well as customize their appearance down to the finest details, including the color and logo of the group’s profile cover or link style. All these features are already available and may be unlocked by group members who can boost their favorite chats. Such boosted groups can now also offer Voice-to-Text conversion and premium Custom Emoji to their members.

Boosts for Groups

Groups can now gain levels thanks to boosts from members or giveaways. In addition to group stories and custom appearance, higher levels give members access to premium features like voice-to-text and custom emoji when messaging inside the group.

Stories from Groups

This update introduces a novel way of communication in groups, where admins can now post stories. Replies from members will be sent to the group, sparking new conversations.

To post a story as your group, either tap the story icon (+) on the group's profile or select the group in the 'Post Story As' section of the story editor.

Emoji Status, Covers, Wallpapers, and Link Styles

Boosted groups support unique customization options, which are available only on Telegram. You can change the color and logo of your group's profile cover, set an emoji status, and choose a wallpaper that will be visible to all who open the group.

For their emoji status, groups can select from the thousands of emoji made by Telegram artists, adding anything from an animated gamepad to a cryptic eggplant next to the group name.

To customize your group, open its profile and select Edit > Appearance. The group's level determines which appearance settings are available.

Group Emoji Packs

Higher-level groups unlock some Telegram Premium features for communication inside the chat.

Admins can choose one pack of custom emoji that all members are allowed to use in the group – even if they don't have Telegram Premium.

You can choose an emoji set made by Telegram artists or create a unique pack just for your group chat.

Voice-to-Text and More

Members of boosted groups can also enjoy unlimited voice-to-text transcription for voice and video messages sent in the group.

This is just the beginning – future updates will add even more features to power up your group chat.

A list of all the group perks available at every level can be found here.

Permissions for Boosters

Messages from users who boosted the group show a special Booster Badge, which evolves with every boost sent. Admins can apply special permissions for boosters, giving them unique privileges, like ignoring Slow Mode or other restrictions.

Permissions for Boosters

Telegram Premium includes 4 boosts that can be assigned to any group or channel – and you get 3 more boosts each time you give Premium as a gift.

We planned to include 5 more features in this update, but the App Store Gods were not in our favor. But that’s OK — you’ll see these features very soon in our March update!

Saved Messages 2.0, One-Time Voice Messages and 8 More Features

2024-02-01 02:31:29

Saved Messages 2.0, One-Time Voice Messages and 8 More Features

Throughout January, we added 10 new features to Telegram – including upgraded Saved Messages, one-time voice and video messages that delete after playing, detailed read receipts that show what time your message was read, and much more.

Saved Messages 2.0

Every Telegram user has a chat called Saved Messages, a place for notes, reminders, and messages forwarded from other chats.

This update turns Saved Messages into a powerful storage system for your links, media, and bookmarks. You can now view your saved messages by chat or as a compact list, organize them with tags, and use the new 'Saved' tab in Shared Media to access messages you saved from any particular chat.

View Saved Messages by Chat

The new View as Chats mode lets you see a list of private chats, groups, and channels from which you've forwarded messages. You can pin any of these chats to the top.

To switch views, simply tap the title in your Saved Messages. You can also tap ⋮ / ⋯ and select 'View as Messages' or 'View as Chats' – in this case, Saved Messages will be shown in the selected mode the next time you open them.

Premium Tags for Saved Messages

For even more organization, you can add multiple tags to your Saved Messages that let you quickly filter them in Search.

Because tags are based on emoji, adding a tag is as easy as adding a reaction, but tags can also have names. Tags are already available to all Telegram Premium users.

To search in your Saved Messages, tap the 🔍 icon in the top corner. Your tags will appear under the search bar – simply tap to filter your search by that tag.

Saved Messages in Shared Media

Chats, groups, and channels all have a shared media section to swiftly access photos, links, music, and more. This update adds a new 'Saved' tab as well, containing any messages from that chat that you've forwarded to your Saved Messages.

Upgraded Search

We've improved searching in all chats, and now it's easier to navigate your search results and view them as a compact list.

Tip: The fastest way to open search in any chat is by tap and hold on its title.

One-Time Voice and Video Messages

The View-Once setting is now available for voice and video messages. Such messages can only be played one time before they are automatically deleted – with an animation that will make you want to send them again and again.

To record a view-once message, hold down and then swipe up to lock recording, then tap the view-once icon before sending.

Pause and Resume Recording

While recording any voice or video message, you can now pause and then resume recording later – instead of sending multiple messages.

To pause, swipe up to lock recording and tap the pause ⏸️ button. To resume recording, simply tap the microphone or camera icon again.

Read Time in Private Chats

When you send a message, 1 check (✓) means it was delivered, while 2 checks (✓✓) mean it was read – and in 1-on-1 chats, you can now see the exact time when your message was opened.

Read times have their own granular privacy settings, based on the privacy settings of your Last Seen status. If you hide your Last Seen time from certain users, you can also choose to hide your read status from them.

To protect privacy, read times in private chats are only visible for 7 days before being deleted – just like in groups.

Premium One-Way Last Seen and Read Times

By default, hiding your last seen or read time from a user also hides theirs from you. But with Telegram Premium, you can hide your last seen and read time and still see those of others who share theirs with you.

If you hide your last seen or read time, it is always hidden from all users – including Premium users.

Premium Private Message Permissions

With this update, Premium users are able to select who can send them messages – either 'Everyone' or 'My Contacts and Premium Users'. When enabled, users who aren't contacts or don't have Premium can't start chats with you – but can reply if you message them first.

If you receive an unwanted message from another user, there is a button at the top of the chat to block the user and alert our moderators.

Premium Faster Loading Time and High Quality Stories

Video stories will now load 4x faster. We've also added a new setting for Premium users to view video stories in higher quality – if they don't mind the extra traffic.

All users can now control playback speed in video stories.

New design for shared contacts

Messages with shared contacts now look better and reflect the color and emoji icons that these users selected in their Appearance Settings.

Improved Video Messages on iOS

In addition to one-time mode and pausing & resuming, we've improved video message recording on iOS. Now, you can enjoy clearer video quality, switch between front and back cameras more quickly, and experience less camera shake.

App Icons on macOS

With the direct version of Telegram for macOS, you can now choose from 15 icons to make your app match your theme or stand out in the dock.

To change your app icon, go to Settings > Appearance > App Icon.

Colorful Calls, Thanos Snap Effect, and an Epic Update for Bots

Colorful Calls, Thanos Snap Effect, and an Epic Update for Bots

Colorful Calls, Thanos Snap Effect, and an Epic Update for Bots

Telegram's 10th update of 2023 adds improved calls with a colorful new design that use less of your phone's battery, a new vaporize effect when you delete messages, the largest bot update in Telegram's history – and more.

Upgraded Calls

Telegram calls let users talk, turn on their camera or share their screen — they are protected by end-to-end encryption and available on every platform.

In this update, we have totally redesigned calls, adding new animations and beautiful backgrounds that change dynamically based on the call's status: ringing, active or ended. The new interface requires fewer resources than before, which means it saves battery life and works better on older devices.

We've also fixed hundreds of bugs and interface glitches – and added some improvements to call quality. More improvements to connection and audio quality are coming in 2024.

Thanos Snap Effect when Deleting Messages

Last month we added an experimental vaporize animation on iOS for auto-deleted messages.

This impressive (and energy-efficient) animation is now available on both iOS and Android and plays whenever you delete any message.

Epic Bot Update: Reactions and Much More

Telegram's free bot platform lets developers integrate any kind of service into the Telegram ecosystem – from simple chat bots to powerful mini apps that can replace any website.

We're closing this year with the largest update to the Bot Platform in Telegram's history. Among dozens of new features, bots can now react to messages and manage reactions, quotes, and links, send replies to other chats or topics, and much more.

With the new update, bots can also get information about giveaways and boosts in channels where they are admins.

Developers can find all the changes to the Bot Platform in this epic changelog.

If you're interested in building bots and mini apps, check out our Bot Guide, where you can find extra info and even a step-by-step tutorial for beginners.

This update includes more new features, but we will tell you about them in January. In the meantime, call your friends to congratulate them – or make a bot to do it for you. See you very soon, next year!

Channel Appearance, Posts in Stories and More

Channel Appearance, Posts in Stories and More

Channel Appearance, Posts in Stories and More

In Telegram's Christmas update, channels can set wallpapers, emoji statuses and profile logos, users can repost channel messages to stories, Telegram Premium can be given to multiple people at once, giveways can include additional prizes, and more.

Customize Channel Appearance

Channels are now able to customize their appearance as they gain levels thanks to boosts from subscribers or giveaways.

In addition to the color of their messages, channel owners can now choose a color and logo for their profile cover, set an emoji status and a wallpaper that will be visible to all who open the channel.

For their emoji status, channels can choose from the thousands of emoji made by Telegram artists, adding anything from an animated snowman to a cryptic hotdog next to the channel name.

To customize your channel, open its profile and select Channel Settings > Appearance.

The channel's level determines which appearance settings are available. Levels also enable channels to post stories and add custom reactions.

Share Posts in Stories

Messages from channels can now be reposted to stories. This adds a copy of the message, which you can move, resize and decorate. Anyone who views your story can simply tap to open the message in its channel.

Reposts support all message types – like photos, files and even voice or video messages. In the coming updates, reposts to stories will get additional features, like interactive polls.

To repost a message, tap the Share Arrow next to the message and select 'Repost to Story'.

Massive Premium Gifts

To congratulate your friends, you can now gift Telegram Premium to multiple people at once – and take care of this year's Christmas gifts in record time.

In Settings there is a new 'Gift Premium' section, where you can select up to 10 users and give them Telegram Premium in one tap. If one of those users already has Premium, they can save the gift to activate later or send it to a friend.

Premium can also be gifted to individual users from their Profile > ⋮ / ⋯ > Gift Premium.

Custom Prizes and Winner Lists in Giveaways

Channels hosting giveaways can now set a longer duration and specify additional prizes – to raffle off everything from burritos to Bugattis.

For even more transparency, giveaway hosts can toggle 'Show Winners' to announce the accounts that won. If this is enabled, the lucky winners are announced in a new confetti-filled message.

Telegram randomly selects the winners and automatically distributes Telegram Premium gift codes. Channel admins are responsible for delivering any additional prizes they wish to include.

View Reposts and More

Users can already see who viewed their story and how they reacted – and channels get detailed statistics to track how their stories perform.

With this update, channel admins can now view reactions to their stories and both users and channels can see who reposted their stories.

Photo Cutouts for Stories

Photos from your gallery can be placed on top of stories – and now you can remove the background from images of your pets, friends and legendary artifacts.

To add a photo to a story, open the sticker panel in stories and tap the photo icon. Then select the photo, tap > in the menu and 'Cut Out' to erase its background. This feature requires iOS 17+ or Android 7+ with Google Play Services installed.

That's all for today's update – we'll try to fit more new features into the chimney before this year is out.

Happy Winter Holidays!

Similar Channels, Reposting Stories, and 9 More Features

2023-11-30 22:28:19

Similar Channels, Reposting Stories, and 9 More Features

Similar Channels, Reposting Stories, and 9 More Features

Today's update lets you find similar channels to those you follow, repost stories from friends and channels, and add video messages to stories. We've also added profile colors, wallpapers for both sides, story stats and custom reactions for channels, voice transcription for everyone and much more.

Similar Channels

Hundreds of millions follow Telegram channels to keep up with latest news, entertainment content and AI-generated pictures of six-fingered cats.

To make discovering channels easier, when you join a channel, you'll now see a list of similar public channels.

Only public channels appear in the list, they are selected automatically based on similarities in their subscriber bases.

You can also access Similar Channels from a channel's profile.

Reposting Stories

You can repost stories from your friends and favorite channels to your page, increasing their audience in just two taps.

Reposting a story lets you add extra content like text, audio or even a video comment – along with a separate visibility setting for your repost.

To repost a story, tap the share arrow and select 'Repost Story' – to protect privacy, only stories that are visible to 'Everyone' can be reposted.

Video Messages on Stories

When posting a story, you can now add a video message to supply commentary or simply make a face. Video messages can be resized and moved around the screen, as well as along the time axis to start or end at any frame. The creative possibilities are endless — from giving backstory to a photo to creating a video conversation with yourself as different characters.

Video Messages on Stories

Stories you repost also support video messages – so you can share your thoughts on a trending topic or join a conga line of creators reposting each other.

To record a video message, hold the camera icon in the story editor. Hold on the video track at the bottom of the screen to control volume.

Premium: Profile Colors

Our previous update let Premium users choose a color for their name, links they send and replies to their messages.

Starting today, Telegram Premium also lets you set a unique color combination with logos (like these or these) for your profile to make the page stand out.

To customize your messages or profile, go to Settings > Chat Settings > Change Your Color on Android. On iOS, it's under Settings > Appearance > Your Color.

Premium: Wallpapers for Both Sides

Anyone can set custom wallpapers for individual chats – making each conversation easy to recognize with different themes and your favorite photos.

Now, Premium users can set a wallpaper for both sides, applying the same appearance for both themselves and their chat partner.

To set a custom wallpaper in any 1-on-1 chat, tap ⋮ (on iOS, open the user's profile, then select ⋯) > Change Wallpaper.

Voice-to-Text for Everyone

Since 2022, Premium users have been able to transcribe voice and video messages – helping them quickly see what was said or even translate audio in different languages.

With this update, all users can convert up to 2 messages per week into text – simply tap the →A icon to try it out.

Note: This feature will be rolling out gradually and may not be available everywhere immediately.

Telegram Premium still allows for unlimited voice-to-text conversion.

Story Stats for Channels

Channels that are able to post stories can now see statistics for story views, shares and reactions – with detailed graphs to track their reach and performance.

Story Stats for Channels

Story stats can be seen by tapping ⋮/⋯ when viewing your story, or in Channel Info > ⋮/⋯ > Statistics.

Channel stats, boosts and giveaway settings are easier to reach via Channel Info > Edit > Statistics and Boosts.

Custom Reactions for Channels

Channel admins have a new interface for managing reactions – where they can add or remove specific emoji.

In addition to standard reactions, channels can also add custom emoji – getting 1 custom reaction for each level they have.

Custom Reactions for Channels

Channel stats now show a reaction sentiment graph, based on the emoji used to react to its posts. It tracks positive and negative for emotional equivalents of 👍 / 🔥 and 👎 / 💩, and 'other' for the more ambigious options like 🦆, 🧞‍♂️ or 🪃.

Code Highlighting in Messages

Thanks to the winner of a recent coding contest, all Telegram apps are now able to detect the coding language and highlight the syntax in messages sent with ```code formatting``` – so you can finally see the difference between Java and C#. 😉

Code Highlighting

Improvements for Topics

In groups with Topics enabled, your app will save your view preference of View as Messages or View as Topics when you open the group again.

Improvements for Topics

Thanos Snap Effects on iOS

Auto-deleted messages on iOS have an awesome animation when their timer runs out – watch as they get vaporized into a million pixels before disappearing forever.

You can enable an auto-delete timer for messages in individual chats, or across your entire account. The quickest way to see the new animation in action is by setting up a short self-destruct timer in a Secret Chat.

That's all for today. We'll continue working on similar updates full of features to explore.

Giveaways in Channels and Free Premium

2023-11-06 22:15:44

Giveaways in Channels and Free Premium

Giveaways in Channels and Free Premium

Channel owners can now launch Giveaways to randomly distribute prizes among their followers. This is great if you want to promote your channel, get new subscribers or reward existing ones.

Giveaways have been a popular trend on social media for a while, but until now it was impossible to quickly organize them in a verifiable and transparent manner. Today Telegram changes that. This will allow millions of users to receive prizes like Telegram Premium subscriptions, and Telegram will guarantee that winners are selected fairly.

Free Telegram Premium

Channel owners can create a Giveaway in just a few taps. Telegram will randomly select the winners based on the rules they set – and distribute the prizes.

The lucky winners will receive links with gift codes, which can serve as public verification that they won. Each code includes a free subscription to Telegram Premium, but the organizers may add other prizes (like Teslas) on top to spice things up.

To try this out, Join the Giveaway sponsored by the Chief Totem Animal of Telegram before November 13th. If you already have Premium, you can still enter and win – and pass the prize to a friend.

Getting Boosts

In addition to getting new followers, channels automatically earn 4 boosts for every subscription that they give out in giveaways. These boosts can't be reassigned and stay with the channel for the duration of the subscriptions in the giveaway. Boosts help channels level up and unlock stories, custom colors and more.

Creating Giveaways

Beyond the number of winners and giveaway duration, the organizer can specify whether all subscribers or only new subscribers are eligible – and select certain countries or require that participants subscribe to other channels to be included.

Channels of any level can start a giveaway via Channel Info > ⋮ or ⋯ > Statistics > Boosts > Get Boosts via Gifts.

Paying for Giveaways

To start a giveaway, the organizer must pay in advance for the Premium subscriptions they wish to award. This can be done from any Telegram app, but is more affordable via @PremiumBot or Fragment.

The App Store and Google Play limit the size of transactions – while @PremiumBot allows for larger purchases. For massive giveaways, Fragment lets you distribute thousands of subscriptions at a time.

Paying for a giveaway on Fragment

You can access @PremiumBot from Telegram Web, Telegram Desktop or the direct version of Telegram for Android.

More Boosts for Users

Starting today, each Telegram Premium account receives more boosts as part of its subscription. Instead of one boost, users who pay for their own subscription have 4 boosts to spread among several channels – or to give certain channels multiple boosts.

Choosing a channel to boost

If you gift Premium to someone, they'll get 1 boost and you'll get 3 more for your own account. If you win Premium in a giveaway, your 4 boosts automatically go to the host channel instead.

That's all for today, we'll be back soon to give away more new features to boost your mood this fall.

Today's update lets you quote specific parts of messages when replying, send your replies to other chats, add quote formatting to any text, configure link previews, choose a color for your account, and much more.

Reply Revolution

Telegram pioneered replies back in 2015, for the first time giving people an intuitive way of following complex conversations in chats. Other messaging apps have adopted Telegram's standard – and today we're pushing the boundaries further.

Now users can quote specific parts of any message, making their responses 100% precise. Tapping the quote focuses on the exact location in the original message with a beautiful animation.

To quote a message, tap (on iOS, hold) the message, then hold and drag to select text and choose 'Quote'.

Starting today, replies can also be sent to other chats – in case you want to reply privately or move the discussion to a different group or channel. Tapping the reply from another chat opens the message in its original chat if you are allowed to access it.

To reply in a different chat, tap the reply bar above the input field, select 'Reply in Another Chat', then choose where you'd like to send it.

Quote Formatting

Beyond quoting others directly, you can add quote formatting to any text, including multiple quotes in one reply.

We've also improved the context menu to make formatting options easier to access.

Adjustable Link Previews

In 2015, Telegram was also the first messaging app to add detailed link previews, showing a title, description and media for the page.

This update gives you unprecedented control over link previews in your messages. You can change the size of media, choose whether the preview appears above or below your message and select which link to preview if there are several.

Opening links has become easier since you can now tap anywhere in the preview area.

Reply, Forwarding and Link Settings

Whenever you're replying when forwarding messages, including links in a reply, or doing all three together, you can now access all settings using the new tabs in the menu.

Premium Account Colors

With Telegram Premium, you can customize your account further than ever by choosing a color or color combination for your account.

This changes the color of your name in all groups, any links you send, as well as replies to your messages.

Additionally, you can choose an icon that will be used as a pattern, creating a unique background behind your messages when others quote or reply to you.

To set an account color on Android, go to Settings > Chat Settings > Change Name Color. On iOS, go to Settings > Appearance > Your Name Color.

These settings are also available for channels that have been boosted to Level 5 or higher.

Story Improvements

Stories now let you fast-forward and rewind videos – simply hold down on the screen and then slide right or left.

For better, brighter selfies, you can use the front flash – with flexible settings for warmth and intensity.

To adjust the warmth and intensity of the flash, hold the ⚡ icon when using the front-facing camera for a story.

Opening stories for the first time shows a quick tutorial, covering their basic browsing gestures.

That's all for today. We'll be Linking Forward to your Replies while we're working on the next update.
