Now we're beginning to see some real tariff revenue. Monday's custom duty deposit to Treasury from CBP was $11.7 billion, almost $7 billion higher than the April 2024 deposit. Suggests that tariffs were biting in April in a way they weren't in February or March.

Trump said that tariffs on China wouldn’t be as high as 145%. He hinted that they might come down substantially.
I still point to the possibility of up to 60% tariff for China and 10% tariff for most of the world by the end of his mandate.
And no, contrary to many analysts commenting on X, Trump didn‘t blink first.
Trump always begins with an outrageous or extremely aggressive demand - often framed in bombastic, uncompromising terms. By pushing extreme demands, Trump forces everyone - media, allies, rivals - to respond to his framing. He psychologically dominates the cycle, controls the language of debate, and paints opponents as weak or reactive.
Then, Trump raises the stakes - through executive orders, tariffs, abrupt withdrawals, or inflammatory tweets. He thrives on instability as a negotiation leverage. He often creates a manufactured crisis - and then offers to fix it, but only on his terms.
After creating the maximum chaos, Trump scales back - often claiming total victory. He lowers the bar after raising it unreasonably - and walks away with much more than anyone expected him to originally get, especially politically.

Feel free to hate his tone, but is he wrong?

Last week, we hosted a call for @ExanteData clients on the ongoing asset allocation shift and (very negative) implications for the dollar.
Here I am just posting the opening slides from the call, that illustrates that there is nothing normal about the current regime...

Domestic freight out of LA is at the weakest levels (seasonally adjusted) it has been since 2020.
Up till now, the "Liberation day tariffs" have not been a factor in declining volumes out of S. Cal.
It is going to get worse.
