Who’s Suing Whom in AI?

2026-06-22 23:01:14

A visualisation of selected lawsuits from over 100 filed against AI companies as of June 2026.

The first salvos in a structural conflict against the inherently extractive nature of AI models? Or a massive legal pile-on? Yeah. Probably both.

Most are copyright claims by authors, record labels, newsrooms, academic publishers and um, Disney who say major AI models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude have been trained illegally on their creative and commercial output, far beyond “fair use”.

$$$Billions

2026-04-12 16:15:49

Every year(ish), since 2009, I’ve been gathering and visualising billions from news headlines and reports. These gargantuan numbers often make little sense unless put in context and comparison with other billions. So here’s the latest interactive edition.

Peak Ages of Productivity for Authors, Painters, Musicians & Scientists

2025-07-04 21:41:44

Using number of books, paintings, albums and papers released by practitioners at each age.

Interesting research from Miller (1999) and Kanazawa (2003)

Alt text: "Graph showing number of books released by male and female authors at different ages. Peak production age for both genders is around 46. Data source: Miller (1999) from a sample of 229 notable authors."

Area Graph titled "Painters - Peak Age of Production" showing the number of paintings created by artists at different ages from a sample of 739 painters. The peak production age is 35, with separate lines for male (blue) and female (beige) painters. Data source: Miller (1999).

Area Graph titled "Jazz Musicians - Peak Age" showing the number of albums released by artists of each age. The peak number of albums is at age 36. Data source: Miller (1999) from a sample of 719 notable jazz musicians.

Area Graph showing peak age for scientists' major discoveries and publications. The x-axis represents age ranging from 20 to 80, and the y-axis shows the number of discoveries. The purple curve (1935-1965) peaks sharply around age 37, while the green curve (post-1965) peaks more broadly. Annotations indicate that the burden of knowledge increased after 1965, requiring more time to master fields.
